My relationship with food
People always ask me how I coach my clients around food. I don’t believe in telling anyone exactly what to eat. I teach the concepts of good nutrition rather than recommending a strict diet. I help people take control of their health rather than telling them what to do. Empowering people is more successful.
Our society is so obsessed with quick fix fad diets that promise fast weight loss. We’ve all tried a diet at some point in our lives and they usually don’t last. Why? Diets aren’t sustainable. Are you really going to tell me that you’re never going to eat refined sugar or flour ever again? That’s what many diets have you cut out. The latest is no grains at all, ever. Is that something you’re willing to get on board with? I sure can’t. The point I’m trying to make is that if you eat a healthy diet most of the time, you can still indulge occasionally and it won’t put you in a downward spiral. This is called the 90/10 principle. You eat healthy 90% of the time and fun food 10% of the time. This is how you can live a more balanced lifestyle without giving up everything you love.
I don’t eat gluten because it causes me stomach pain and increases inflammation. I can feel it throughout my whole body. Other than that, I eat whatever I want, but I eat with intention and with an understanding of how food affects my body. I eat mostly whole foods, but I’m also a foodie and enjoy splurging from time to time. I feel best eating this way because I’m not depriving myself of anything, except gluten, which my taste buds miss, but my body doesn’t.
If I go out with friends or to a party I don’t feel like I have to hold back. Now that my body is cleaner and stronger I can enjoy some decadent food in moderation. Now I check in with myself and decide what my body wants. Eating this way has helped me stay at a healthy weight that I can maintain because it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle. This is how I coach my clients and it works.
I also believe that everyone can benefit from detoxing a few times a year. When we over indulge in the foods we love, our bodies have to work overtime to eliminate the toxins. We are all guilty of this at times, especially around the holidays. This is why I decided to do a 10-Day Sugar Detox.
